Euro 2020: Deschamps: We played a great match against a great opponent

France coach Didier Deschamps said his team played a "great match against a great opponent", referring to a 1-0 victory over Germany in their first European Championship appearance.

"It was a great match against a great opponent," Deschamps said after the match. "I knew the players would be ready and they were."

He added, "It was a match that could have been a semi-final or a final. Although the three points are not final, they are important."

The French team began its career in the European Nations Championship with a deserved and valuable victory over its German counterpart, with a clean goal, on Tuesday evening, at the top of the first round of Group F in the tournament.

At the Allianz Arena, the German stronghold of Bayern Munich, the only goal of the match came with the help of friendly fire, with a goal by defender Mats Hummels in the 20th minute of the match.

With this result, Deschamps' battalion begins its journey towards the third and first continental title after 21 years with an important victory that puts it at the top of the group along with Portugal, which has the advantage of the goal difference after its great victory over Hungary by three clean points earlier. As for the German national team, it comes in third place without a goal difference against Hungary.

In the second round, France will play Hungary in order to win to confirm qualification for the next round on Saturday.

While the German "machines" will be in an unenviable position when they face the defending champion on the same day in order to avoid losing and then bid farewell to the championship through the small door.
